Small cars ‘deliver same fuel efficiency as big motorcycles’

Some small cars use as much fuel per gallon as larger motorcycles, according to a new article in Ward’s Auto. This was brought to light in an article which looked at modern plug-in electric cars almost five years after they first hit the market.

Author, Drew Winter said: “One-fifth of Fords sold in Europe are now powered by the company’s turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine". Unlike some of Ford’s larger EcoBoost engines, it appears to outperform the Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy ratings in real world use.

Mr Winter achieved 42 miles per gallon in the Fiesta EcoBoost – which is only slightly lower than a Triumph Speed Triple motorcycle. The bike also uses a non-turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine and weighs roughly one-fifth of the Fiesta.

It is quicker and sportier but it holds half as many people, virtually no cargo and returns 34 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway. Winter concluded the Obama Administration “vastly underestimated how much conventional internal-combustion engines could improve.”
